Librarians as Information Neutral Professionals
Friday, Apr 23, 2021
11:00am – 12:30pm
In this session of our Social Justice series, we are going to be addressing the history and present day challenges to the profession of librarianship around the dichotomy of libraries being information neutral and libraries being advocates for equality.
Beginning with some historical perspective and moving into examples of how libraries are responding to the social outcry for anti-racism policies and practices, the presenter will lead a facilitated discussion on the role of the academic and public library in times of social unrest.
This session is largely focused on increasing education and awareness of these issues both individual and institutional perspectives. The session will also include practical guidelines for putting social values into practice in an inclusive manner and not a polarizing one.
